Sammi Jones, with determination, drive, and courage, hits roller derby challenges head on, despite life’s slams along that track. Her colorful spirit soars with heart and strength, while her alter-ego—“Toni Crush”—takes to the track and her opponents with endurance and fearless perseverance. Sammi’s memoir portrays the clash of her two volatile personas: tough-as-concrete Toni Crush, who craves derby recognition, and Sammi, who longs for bonding with family and friends while drowning her disappointments in alcohol. She knows she’s weak, but despite false starts and downward spirals she confronts derby’s and life’s challenges.

Sammi Jones got her start in roller derby in 2010 when she joined the Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University Moorhead and has written for a variety of publications. She resides in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area where she works as an assistant editor for a trade magazine and skates for Minneapolis's North Star Roller Girls.
