St. Paul poet KathrynOakley will share poems from her new book, Incense Drifting to the Horizon. Incense was selected by North Star Press for its 2017 literary list, and includes over 50 poems written over the course of Kathryn’s career as a teacher and college administrator, which began with her role teaching English as "Miss Halter" at Sheridan Junior High. She has also been a lecturer with Minnesota Chautauqua, taught graduate courses in humanities and research methods, and chaired the board at Unity Church-Unitarian. In the words of one reviewer, the poems in Incense “give us evocative imagery to lift up the small and large moments of our lives: memory, death, the pain of limitation. In her poems on love—young love, old love, hot love, mother love—you will recognize what is hard to name but true.” Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.
Joining Kathy in a first-ever family collaboration will be award-winning Twin Cities filmmaker Damian Kussian. Damian is the founder and lead producer/director of Flyover Films, a creative production house based in Northeast Minneapolis specializing in documentary style storytelling. Flyover is “enraptured by the human experience, obsessed with creating quality video that makes a lasting impact on the viewer.” The company recently won a regional Emmy for their work. Utilizing a compelling, symbiotic approach, Damian will screen clips of his acclaimed work in accompaniment to Kathy's poems.
