My Mom's Guitar is a one-man acoustic act. He would be next to nothing without frantically strumming his mom's guitar so it seemed fitting to be named after the instrument. And contrary to the name, he picks a soulful banjo here and there as well. It would be bluegrass if there were other people in the band and it would be folk if the lyrics were about folks but as one line goes, "you've never heard a guy write more songs about himself and his misery, selfish misery." Though the songs aren't all about mental illness they are written with that lens. Psychic pain and disappointment in relationships are common themes but relief comes if you're willing to laugh about how hard life can be. Kick back, relax—and hopefully you'll hear something you can relate to.
